Dave and Andy's
Florida Bass Hunt on Lake Okeechobee

Day One - Tuesday, June 24, 1997

It all started at Glen Hunters Guide Service. Glen no longer has to work so the store attendant told us we could meet Bob Greene in the morning.

This photo was taken at 5:40am on Tuesday morning. It seemed earlier to the photographer.

The first fish of the day (worth taking a picture of) for Andy. A moderate sized Black Bass.

Dave's first Bass of the day!! Looks a bit bigger than Andy's, doesn't it??

Andy's second Bass of the day!! A little bigger and a much happier fisherman!!

And now Dave gets another!! Pretty fair size.

And Andy gets another!! Looks a little bigger as well !!

It's turning into a fair fishing day after all. With all the talk this morning of fishing being a bit slow, we were worried.

Guide Bob Greene uses the club to subdue the Mudfish (a.k.a Grinnell, Bowfin, or Trash fish). We would catch a few of these creatures through the day, but Dave has the record for the largest Mudfish... Bob estimated 8 to 9 pounds !!

Andy gets one more Bass !! Not so big, but a fish is a fish!! Great Day of fishing in Florida !!

Nice shades huh ??

Here we see an Alligator stalking a bird. He (or she) was very patient... but never got the bird.

Not pictured was the Alligator that tried to eat Dave's bobber... He grabbed it and took off for the bottom. The look on Dave's face was even better. He didn't know what to do... Reel him in? Just hold on? Throw the pole in the water...

The Alligator decided he didn't want to mess with us so he just left!! We were glad!!

Day one comes to an end. Good fishing and great fun!! A little dinner in Okeechobee (Shoney's .. just fair) and off for a fun evening of TV and rest!!

Day Two - Wednesday, June 25, 1997

Day two of the fishing expedition was slower than the first. Dave caught the first fish. A Pickerel of medium size. One of four fish which make-up the Grand Slam on Lake O. Just ask what the O means!!

The biggest Mudfish so far... Bob says 8 to 9 pounds. What a fish!! Wish I had caught it!!

Andy's only catch of the day. A 6 pound Alligator Gar. What a fight!! Cool to catch, but hard to get off the hook. Watch out for those sharp teeth.

----- The Boys -----

OK, time to come in. A slow day and not a single Bass! Not my idea of the big Bass Hunt at Lake Okeechobee. We're off to dinner and rest once again.

Dinner - Burger and fries... No energy to drive to Okeechobee for a square meal. A little billiards (Dave is pretty good!) and we are done!!

Day Three - Thursday , June 26, 1997

New day and new Guide. Stafford Burgess (not pictured) knows how to find Bass on the Big O. Stafford let us know that only Bass count. Anything else didn't exist!! On day three we caught 15 Black Bass. All pictures which depict other types of fish really didn't happen!!

Andy's first catch of the day. Not a bad fish to start with. We caught the first fish drifting with a shiner. We need to try that on Lake Ray Roberts.

Dave's first catch worth taking a picture was a Bowfin. The locals call it a Mudfish... The reason we took its photo was because it weighed at least 12 pounds.

Now Dave caught a fish!! Sometimes size doesn't matter.

OK, now a better fish. Does Dave look Happy or Not!!

Now this is more like it! We are talking Bass Here !! The big FISH (see definition) of the trip.

This baby weighed 7 pounds 12 ounces. Not quite big enough to hang on the wall, but close enough to take some pictures and remember the big one that didn't get away!

This picture (same fish as above) was taken using the photography guidance of Glen Hunter. Apparently, he knows how to take a fish picture! This one is also hanging on the wall at Glen Hunters Guide Service in Lakeport, FL.

Finally my turn again. A bit of a dry spell for me. Our last fishing spot was a canal near Lakeport. I seemed to have the magic fishing pole as this was one of 5 or 6 fish I brought in the boat in 10 to 15 minutes. Dave did finally catch a fish here....

And the last fish of the trip. Not a bad Bass... Although I haven't met a Bass I didn't like.

I caught the Quantity, and Dave the Quality!!

A Great trip on a Big lake! We'll have to do this again when the fish are really biting. We understand that the best time is between October and December... According to the Man in the Know . . . Glen Hunter ! !

Our thanks to the Glen Hunter Guide Service and guides Bob and Stafford. You guys know how to put us on the fish!!

See ya next time ! ! !
